The synagogue was constructed in the years 1903-1904. Located inconspicuously in a backyard it suffered only little damage during the 'Night of Broken Glass' on November 9th 1938. In 1940 it was confiscated by the Nazis.
After the shoa the synagogoue became the triving home of the small jewish community in East Berlin. After reconstruction work in 2007 it is with 1200 seats the biggest historic synagogue in Germany and continues to be a place for prayer and cultural events.
